How To Sleep With Back Pain

Trying to get to sleep when you have back pain can be very difficult. It can be hard to find a comfortable position that provides the right support for your spine. Twisting and turning can make things worse, causing more pain and stiffness throughout the night and into the next day. So what is the best way to sleep with back pain?

Well, the truth is that a flatbed may not provide the proper support for your spinal cord, resulting in excess pain and restless sleep. A flatbed causes your body to shift into cramped positions and causes improper posture as you sleep. If you’re suffering from back or joint problems, your flatbed will most likely make these worse.

Our bodies have pressure points in our shoulders, back, hips and legs. On a flatbed, gravity is pushing down on those pressure areas which is why we tend to toss and turn. Since the dawn of time this is all that people have known when they go to buy a new bed. It is a flat mattress so you sleep on your side to get comfortable and the cycle continues for the next 7-8 years until you are ready for a new bed again.

Adjustable bed position to decrease lower back pain

Back pain sufferers are often advised to use adjustable beds which can be positioned to properly support your spine and ease your unique pain needs, whether they be related to arthiritis, sciatica, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis or other spinal issues.

Adjustable beds offer a ‘Zero Gravity’ sleeping position, which elevates your head and raises your feet higher than your heart. This position provides a weightless sleep, relieving stress on your body by evenly distributing your weight and reducing pressure on your spine. But don't be fooled, not every person's Zero Gravity position is the same and you can get caught out by being told to press the preset ZG button on the remote and it will be perfect for you. This often is not the case at all and finding your perfect sleeping position can take time, especially if you have not been given the tools to find this on your own.

Using a wireless remote control, you can save your favourite sleeping position so that you can quickly drift off to sleep each night.

Ease back pain with whole body vibration massage

Our adjustable beds come with a whole body vibration massage function with different speeds and a timer so that you can ease your pain with a gentle massage, or enjoy the deep relaxation while drifting off to sleep.

The vibration massage sends energy and signals into your body’s tendons, tissues and muscles forcing them to contract and then relax dozens of times every second. Over time, this improves muscle strength, balance and bone density, plus can reduce pain associated with arthritis, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia.

Best mattress type for back pain

Our adjustable bed systems come with our own designed and engineered Pure Fusion Mattress. A full memory foam mattress, which provides superior back support and spinal alignment. As the mattress moulds to your body, it supports the lower back and allows the spine to stay in a neutral position.

Sleeping information and advice for back pain

Sleeping advice for back pain

Memory foam was initially designed by NASA over 50 years ago. It was designed for seating in space crafts so that the astronauts would be comfortable and safe. Due to its durability, comfort and excellent pressure relief, memory foam is now used widely, particularly for mattresses and bedding.

We're often asked about the differences between hospital beds and adjustable beds. Both bed types have adjustable head and feet ends - but that's where the similarities stop. Here, we explain the key differences.

FAQ

How will sleeping in an adjustable bed help with my back pain?

Sleeping in an adjusted position can help to reduce the pressure on your spine which may be causing some of your pain-related issues.

What is the correct way to sleep in an adjustable bed when suffering lower back pain?

It is best to sleep on your back, and elevate with your feet higher than your heart. The higher the feet, the less pressure on your tailbone.

What does vibration massage therapy do for back pain problems?

The vibration therapy is great for increasing blood flow to your muscles 30 times faster allowing for a boost of circulation and muscle repair.

What are the benefits of an adjustable bed if I suffer from chronic pain, subacute or acute pain?

Finding a position that is your personal Zero Gravity Position is key for evenly distributing weight all over your body. This can relieve your pain simply by the position that you choose.

What if I have a defibrillator or pacemaker, can I use an adjustable bed?

Of course you can but as we are not GPs we recommend chatting to them first before turning on the massage feature of the bed.

I am a side sleeper, how do I train myself to sleep on my back?

For some people this is an easy transition - if you have EVER slept on your back or in a recliner chair you should not have too many issues. However if you are an avid side sleeper, as many Australians are, then the time taken to adjust can be anywhere from one week up to eight weeks. It is easy though, just find a position where you have no pain or pressure on your body and try to fall asleep. If you find it difficult, simply lay the bed flat, roll over and go to sleep - it is just a bed after all. Keep trying to find the perfect elevated position for you every night and eventually you will fall asleep. It just takes a little time and perseverance.

What if my partner and I need different sleeping positions?

Easy. We’re all different sizes, experience different ailments and have different sleeping needs. Better Living Australia’s adjustable beds are designed to let you and your partner personalise the position of your respective bed sides to enhance your own maximum comfort. Each side of your adjustable bed comes with a remote that includes memory preset buttons so that you can achieve your favourite sleeping position in seconds.

Customer reviews

Why did I wait so long?

The beds are very comfortable and easy to use, very relaxing to go to sleep with the aid of massage feature. I suffer from osteo arthritis in both shoulders and lower back pain, I am able to sleep on my back now because I can ease the pain in my back by raising the head and foot of the bed.

So happy we made the purchase

We were delighted to come across a Better Living bed display at a local show where we were told that the bed would fit inside our existing frame. We made the decision there and then to purchase the bed. The delivery was so prompt we hardly had time to empty and remove the bladder of our waterbed.

Faysie ~ March 2022

Perfect

The additional body support provided by being able to put our feet up has been SO relaxing and the massage helps us relax and go to sleep quickly after a hard day of farm chores. An added bonus is that both my husband and I can sleep with different adjustments in the same bed

Beyond expectations

I came home after major spinal surgery in the beginning of August 2022. My bed I had at the time was so hard it was impossible for me to sleep on it. The first night out of hospital I had to sleep on the couch with pillows to support me. The next day I called better living - they were amazing. They not only helped me choose my options, they had the bed delivered and installed the same day. I know they worked after hours to help me, and I cannot tell them enough how grateful I am for the excellent service and help they gave me.

I should have done this sooner

I am so happy with my new bed! It does exactly what I wanted. The massage feature and being able to adjust the head and feet have helped with my aches and pains from being on my feet all day. I can’t thank Tarina enough. She listened to me and gave me great advice. The bed being endorsed by the TGA meant a lot to me.

Great service

I'm not one for spending money really (my wife says I'm a tightwad), but six years ago when I first lay on the Better Living Bed, I knew I had to buy one. Well, I can honestly say that I have never regretted once buying our bed. It's just so comfy and inviting that go to bed early now. Thanks, Better Living Beds.

Great investment!

So glad we bought this bed. It's Super comfy and we love all the features. Hubby sleeps much better now as he can elevate his head instead of stacking his pillows which has helped with his snoring so I can also get a better sleep now.

Best bed we have had!

Have had the bed for 4 months now and are sleeping better than ever. The individually adjustable sides have made it easy for us to setup to what suits ourselves and the massage function certanly helps with a better nights sleep. It has been so good we bought one for our caravan.
